The Curriculum: Towards global citizenship… “If a child be trained to be both learned and good the result is light upon light” Abdu’l-Baha Ocean of Light is a loving and nurturing environment encouraging children and youth to develop their capabilities and commitment so they can contribute to the betterment of the world. In order to develop this aim, Ocean of Light uses the internationally acclaimed University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) program, the world’s largest provider of international qualifications for 1419 year olds. The Cambridge curriculum is divided into: Primary (5-11 years), Lower Secondary (11-14 years), Middle Secondary (14 16 years) and Upper Secondary (16-18 years). For more information specifically on Cambridge see: http://www.cie.org.uk/aboutcie All classes are given in English other than specific Tongan classes. Subjects include English, World and Polynesian History from 1800 to the present, Geography, Social Science, Environmental Science, Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), Business Studies, Computer Studies, Mathematics (up to pre-calculus), Tongan, Physical Education and Art. In the primary levels, songs, dance, art and drama are an important part of the teaching techniques and helps in developing creative and confident students. In the secondary school Ocean of Light is developing a workshop dance program. Cambridge A and AS Levels The A-level, short for Advanced Level, is a qualification in the United Kingdom, usually taken by students during the final two years of secondary school (Years 12 & 13, called the Sixth Form in Tonga). The Cambridge International curriculum is one of the most recognised qualifications around the world. It is accepted as proof of academic ability for entry to universities worldwide. Cambridge International A Levels typically take two years to complete. Cambridge IGCSE Ocean of Light also uses the Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) texts which provides cutting edge curriculum development and an excellent preparation for their next steps in education, including progression to A and AS Level study. IGCSE is recognised by universities and employers worldwide. Assessment of Students Children at all levels are regularly assessed by their teachers. These assessments are diagnostic in nature and help the school to continually evaluate the progress of the child. Teachers keep an ongoing file of children's progress and are available to discuss matters with parents. It is important to note that we do not rank children according to academic results. Reporting to Parents Parents are of course welcome to discuss their child's progress at school at any time. |
